Does Your Porsche Need a New Oil Filter?

The finely engineered engine of your Porsche requires fresh, high-quality motor oil to stay in tip-top condition.

It also needs a good oil filter to keep the motor oil free from contaminants and debris, which would otherwise damage the engine. It’s considered good practice to replace your oil filter each time you have an oil change at your local Porsche dealer. If you forget to change your filter, you might notice the following indications of trouble.

Does Your Porsche Need a New Oil Filter?

Your Oil Pressure Drops

When an aging filter clogs up with debris, it begins to restrict the flow of motor oil through the system. This causes the pressure to drop, which will show on the oil pressure gauge on your dashboard. If the problem is serious, you might even see the low-pressure warning light come on beside the dial.

You Hear Knocking or Ticking

When a clogged or bad filter causes oil pressure to drop, the engine no longer has sufficient oil to lubricate all the moving parts. This leads to premature wear and tear; you’re likely to hear the cylinders, pistons, rods, and other moving components knocking and ticking loudly.

Your Engine Starts To Overheat

Alongside the cooling system, motor oil also helps to regulate the engine’s temperature. So if a clogged filter prevents the oil from properly doing its job, your engine might start to overheat.

This will cause the temperature gauge on your dashboard to shoot up. Other signs of overheating include suddenly dropping engine performance and white vapor seeping out from under the hood.

Your Exhaust Fumes Become Dirty

Clogged filters cause fluctuations in motor oil pressure, which can result in some motor oil getting inside the combustion chambers. When this oil ignites, it may cause sooty smoke to escape from the exhaust pipes.

Your Engine Loses Power

A bad filter will cause the engine to lose power for several reasons. The increased friction and resistance that result from insufficient oil and lubrication will also cause your vehicle’s fuel efficiency to fall.

Your Check Engine Light Appears

As with most engine problems, a clogged filter will often trigger the check engine light on your dashboard. This light means you should have a mechanic take a look right away to diagnose the underlying problem.

Your Porsche Dealer Finds a Fault

Regular oil changes are one of the most important routine maintenance tasks for any Porsche owner to have carried out. While changing your oil, the technician at your local dealership will always check the condition of the filter and let you know if you need to have a new one installed.
